Sites for news, information, discussion, and resources from the field of alternatives to animal testing. Intended to foster the development of scientifically
acceptable in vitro and other alternatives to animal testing. Alternatives are defined as methods which reduce animal use, replace whole animal tests, or refine existing tests by minimizing animal distress.
European Center for Validation of Alternative Methods (ECVAM)
An institute developed to validate methods and strategies to reduce or replace the use of live animals in laboratory studies. Sponsors a variety of activities and publications in support of this mission.
Fund for the Replacement of Animals in Medical Experiments (FRAME)
An organization advocating the Three Rs approach to reducing the number of animals used in research. Supports a variety of research programs, legislative and regulatory reform , information services, public education and publications in support of these aims.
Norwegian Reference Centre for Laboratory Animal Science and Alternatives
Provides audiovisual alternatives to laboratory animals in teaching
Scientists' Center for Animal Welfare (SCAW)
A non-profit, educational association of individuals and institutions whose mission is to promote humane care, use and management of animals involved in research, testing or education in laboratory, agricultural, wildlife or other settings. They sponsor conferences, workshops, seminars and a variety of publications in support of these goals.
UC Center for Animal Alternatives
Serves the animal care community of the University of California's nine campuses and laboratories,
focusing mainly on alternatives in education and the issues surrounding the third R, Refinement. It also acts as a referral service, providing information on how best to search for required information

Public Responsibility in Medicine and Research (PRIM&R)
A national nonprofit organization dedicated to educating the medical and legal professions, industry and the public about the ethical, legal, and policy dimensions of appropriate and ethical research. Provides an extensive series of conference proceedings and educational materials.

Animal Care Unit APHIS
Responsible for implementing the animal welfare program and ensuring compliance with the AWA. Provides links to information on Animal Care regulations and Policy, newsletters, fact sheets and AWA regulated facilities.
Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS)
Provides links to APHIS' animal welfare activities to ensure the humane care of animals used in research via the Animal Welfare Act (AWA), the AWA, and . information obtainable under the Freedom of Information Act. The latter includes USDA inspection reports on research facilities.
National Center for Research Resources (NCRR) Division of Comparative Medicine
This site provides information on the Comparative Medicine area on NCRR. Information on giants, cooperative agreements and contracts available to support primate research, development of animal models, and research projects and postdoctoral training in laboratory animal medicine is given. Links to Comparative Medicine Resources Directory and Comparative Medicine publications are also provided.

Developed by an ILAR Committee of the NRC, this book identifies principles for an effective program to protect the health and safety of the people who care for or use research animals. It is expected that these guidelines will be used in conjunction with the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals in evaluating animal programs.

INFORMATION RESOURCES
Animal Welfare Information Center (AWIC)
Established by the United States Congress in 1986 with the mandate to acquire and disseminate information on alternatives and improved methodologies for the humane care, use, and handling of all animals in research, testing, and education. The Center provides a variety of information and referral services, including computerized literature searching, expert referral, document delivery, and the acquisition, production, and maintenance of materials pertinent to the topic of animal welfare.
Institute for Laboratory Animal Research (ILAR)
Provides guidelines and information on the scientific, technological and ethical use of animals and related biological resources in research, testing and education. Provides Web access to, among other things, the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals and Occupational Health and Safety in the Care and Use of Research Animals.
National Agricultural Library (NAL)
